"Cheating...": Concussion Substitution Sees Rana's Entry, Internet Reacts

Talented pacer Harshit Rana , who has played two Tests, quite surprisingly made a surprise entry into the India playing XI in the fourth T20I against England in Pune on Friday. Though initially not named in the XI, Rana was called upon to replace allrounder Shivam Dube as a 'like-for-like' concussion substitute after the latter was struck on the helmet in the final over of India's innings. Dube, who scored 53, was hit on the helmet in the penultimate ball of the Indian innings by a Jamie Overton delivery. Following the mandatory concussion test, Dube was cleared to play. However, he was run out on the final delivery of the innings. Dube is a pace allrounder, while Rana has so far played the role of  specialist fast bowler in the Indian cricket team. Rana, who had recently played in the opening Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, came in to bowl in the 12th over and made an immediate impact, dismissing Liam Livingstone for 9. Rana finished with three w...

"Why Was My Photo Made Viral?": Man Detained, Released In Saif Attack Case

The 31-year-old man who was detained in Chhattisgarh as a suspect in the Saif Ali Khan case earlier this month said the police action has cost him his job and a marriage proposal, brought immense disrepute to his family, and left him with an "unbearable dangerous feeling".  In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Akash Kanojia, who was briefly detained and interrogated, said his photograph was widely circulated despite having no involvement in the crime. "Why was my photo made viral? I want justice," he said, threatening to move court if his photograph was not brought down by all those who shared it across various online platforms. He also sought to know if police would have acted in a similar way had a VIP or a millionaire's son been a suspect in the case. On January 18, Mr Kanojia was detained from Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneswari Express at Chhattisgarh's Durg station by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) after a tip off from Mumba...

Trump Blames "Diversity Policies" Under Obama, Biden After Chopper-Plane Crash

US President Donald Trump blamed diversity policies implemented during the Obama and Biden administrations for compromising air safety standards. This statement came after a devastating mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in no survivors. Trump's remarks have ignited a heated debate about the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The President claimed that these initiatives prioritised policy over safety, stating, "I put safety first. Obama, Biden, and the Democrats put policy first." He further emphasised, "They actually came out with a directive: 'too white.' And we want the people that are competent". The FAA's hiring practices have been under scrutiny, with some critics arguing that DEI programs can be discriminatory. However, supporters of these initiatives contend that they address historical and ongoing disc...

Swara Bhaskar's X Account Permanently Suspended Over This Post

Actress Swara Bhaskar is at the centre of a social media controversy after her X (formerly Twitter) account was permanently suspended. Sharing the news on Instagram, she criticised the decision as "ridiculous and untenable." In her post, the actress explained that her X account was suspended due to alleged copyright violations linked to two specific images. One image featured a well-known protest slogan in Hindi: "Gandhi, we are ashamed; your killers are still alive." The other was a photo of her own child waving the Indian flag on Republic Day, with the child's face concealed. Questioning how these could constitute copyright violations, Bhaskar suggested that mass reporting may have led to her suspension, calling it an attempt to silence her. She urged X to reconsider its decision, stating, "If these tweets have been mass reported, it is an effort to harass me and suppress my freedom of speech." Known for her outspoken political views, Bhaskar has...

Hamas To Release 3 Israelis, 5 Thais Today In Exchange For 110 Palestinians

A Palestinian prisoners advocacy group said Israeli authorities would release 110 prisoners, including 30 minors, on Thursday as part of an exchange under a Gaza ceasefire deal agreed with Hamas. "Tomorrow, 110 Palestinian prisoners are to be released," the Palestinian Prisoners' Club said in a statement, referring to the third exchange of hostages and prisoners under the truce, which began on January 19. The group said the prisoners were expected to arrive in the "Radana area of Ramallah at around noon". Publishing the list of the prisoners, the group said 30 were under the age of 18, 32 had been sentenced to life imprisonment, and 48 others were serving jail terms of varying lengths. The group also said that 20 of the prisoners set to be released would be sent into exile. In the previous two swaps, seven Israeli hostages were freed by militants in exchange for 290 prisoners -- almost all Palestinians, with the exception of one Jordanian. On Thursday, thr...

White House Cancels Trumps Federal Funding Freeze Amid Chaos: Reports

Rafts of government aid programs and the health care system for millions of low-income Americans were up in the air after Trump ordered a halt to potentially trillions of dollars in grants, loans and other aid late Monday. The move -- made in an order from White House's Office of Management and Budget -- sparked instant alarm and confusion, as well as a flurry of lawsuits before a judge issued a temporary injunction. On Wednesday, the Office of Management and Budget issued a terse notification saying the freezing of aid order had been "rescinded." However, soon after Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the spending freezes remained in place -- and only the memo from the budget office was rescinded. "This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze" which remains in "full force," she said on X. The White House has strongly defended the freeze as a blow against what Trump says is  waste and "woke" federal spending program...

Faith, Tradition And Law Amid Struggle For Final Resting Place In Chhattisgarh

Image
On January 7, Ramesh Baghel's father died. No one could have imagined that the cremation of a pastor from a village in Bastar would reach the country's Supreme Court. His son wanted to bury him near the graves of his ancestors in the village, but he couldn't. On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered that he must be buried in a cemetery in Jagdalpur, 30-35 km from the village. However, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court was divided on the decision - one judge supported burying the body in the village, while the other said the last rites should be performed in the cemetery reserved for the community. This ground report attempts to explore whether there exists a gap between court verdicts and social realities. Are social conditions often as simple as they appear based on facts alone? A Village at the Crossroads of Faith and Law In Bastar's Padarpara, a group of young people from the Christian community sing prayer songs. But the dusty roads of Chhindawara have settled ...

"You Were Supposed To Ensure Transition": Gambhir Gets '1-Year Warning'

The performances of several veteran Indian cricketers, including the likes of Rohit Sharma , Virat Kohli , Mohamed Siraj, etc. have come under the spotlight over recent poor performances. While Rohit and Virat are even being pushed to quit Test cricket, no such verdict exists at present for head coach Gautam Gambhir . With the Champions Trophy being India's next big assignment, there are some who feel the team's poor show in the ICC event could lead to Gambhir's exit. However, former India opener Aakash Chopra feels the Test tour of England will define whether the head coach will stay or not. Gambhir was brought in as India's head coach after Rahul Dravid 's exit, following the team's ICC T20 World Cup triumph last year. As Gambhir nears completion of one year at the job, Chopra feels the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is bound to review his performances as well. "I feel one more England tour. I don't think the BCCI will say anything to...

China's AI Startup DeepSeek Hit By "Cyberattack", Limits New Registration

Chinese AI sensation DeepSeek on Monday said it was limiting the registration of new users due to large-scale cyberattacks on its services. The company, whose chatbot took over OpenAI's ChatGPT as Apple's top downloaded app on Monday, cited "large-scale malicious attacks" for outages and its inability to take on new users. DeepSeek, which was developed by a start-up based in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, has shown the ability to match the capacity of AI pace-setters such as Nvidia. Its success on the US app store sent shares in AI-linked tech giants plummeting on Monday. The low-cost Chinese generative AI venture is thought to have matched US companies in its abilities but at a fraction of the cost. Analysts had long thought that the United States' critical advantage over China when it comes to producing high-powered chips -- and its ability to prevent the Asian power from accessing the technology -- would give it the edge in the AI race. Available a...

Supreme Court Raps Allahabad High Court Over Bail Denial In Conversion Case

Noting that there was no "good reason" to decline bail, the Supreme Court rapped the Allahabad High Court for failing to show "courage" in granting bail to a cleric in an alleged conversion case. "We can understand that the trial court declined bail as trial courts seldom muster the courage of granting bail, be it any offence. However, at least, it was expected of the High Court to muster the courage and exercise its discretion judiciously," observed the bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, granting bail to the cleric arrested under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. Discretion, said the top court, does not mean that the judge on his own whims and fancy declines bail saying conversion is something very serious. "We are conscious of the fact that grant of bail is a matter of discretion. But discretion has to be exercised judicially keeping in mind the well settled principles of grant of bail. Discr...

Why Trump's Claims About Americans Splitting The Atom Angers New Zealanders

Imagine a newly-elected president of a country claiming the legacy of someone as foundational as Thomas Edison. That's the kind of appropriation New Zealanders are witnessing. The recent inaugural address of President Donald Trump has sparked a heated debate over the origins of a groundbreaking scientific achievement: splitting the atom. Trump's claim that American experts were responsible for this feat has been met with swift correction from New Zealanders, who proudly assert that their native son, Sir Ernest Rutherford, was the true pioneer behind this discovery. Rutherford's achievement in 1917 at Victoria University of Manchester in England marked a pivotal moment in the history of nuclear physics. His work not only earned him a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 but also led to the discovery of radioactive half-life and the understanding that radioactivity involves the transmutation of one chemical element to another. Nick Smith, the mayor of Nelson, near Rutherford...

India Agrees To Take Back 18,000 Nationals From US. Is There A Strategy?

India is taking proactive steps to collaborate with the Trump administration in the United States, aiming to avoid a trade war and strengthen bilateral ties. A significant aspect of this cooperation involves the repatriation of Indian citizens residing illegally in the US. Estimates suggest that around 18,000 Indian migrants are set to be deported, although the actual number could be substantially higher due to the challenges in tracking undocumented individuals, Bloomberg reported. This move is seen as a strategic effort by India to appease the Trump administration, which has been vocal about its intentions to crack down on illegal immigration. In fact, President Trump has already begun to fulfill his campaign promises, pushing to end birthright citizenship and deploying troops to the US-Mexico border. India hopes that by cooperating on the issue of illegal migration, the Trump administration will reciprocate by protecting legal immigration channels, including student visas and the...

Agencies Warn Of Trump's Inauguration Being A Target For Violent Extremists

The upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is expected to be a highly secured event, with U.S. national security agencies warning that it could be an attractive target for violent extremists. Despite no specific credible threats, the agencies are taking precautions due to the heightened political environment and potential for violence. Since the two assassination attempts on Trump, during the 2024 campaign and the recent attacks this year in New Orleans and Las Vegas, officials have been on high alert. Perpetrators may see the swearing-in as "their last opportunity to influence the election results through violence," as a group of intelligence wrote in a threat assessment, accessed by POLITICO . The threat assessment, compiled by the FBI, Secret Service, Capitol Police, and other agencies, highlights various nightmare scenarios, including bomb hoaxes, swatting calls, drone flights, and vehicle-ramming attacks. Foreign terrorists, domestic extremists, and lon...

Fitness App Leads To Massive Security Breach On French Nuclear Submarines

Image
Officers and crew aboard a French nuclear submarine have accidentally blown their cover as well as their location and schedule by recording their runs and jogs on a fitness app. The nuclear submarine scheduled for Russian patrol has risked leaking crucial data such as location, position, and patrol schedule to Moscow. The mobile and smartwatch app in question is the Strava app, which allows its users to share their fitness activities and achievements online and monitor their progress worldwide. The app has a feature which includes publishing the data on a map with the accurate location where the user completed his/her/their exercise or achieved their fitness goal. The location where the faux pas happened was the Ile Longue submarine base in Brest Harbour in France's Finistere. The base is reportedly home to four French nuclear submarines, each carrying 16 nuclear missiles, with an explosive intensity roughly a thousand times as powerful as the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagas...
