Key Numbers To Watch Out For In Nirmala Sitharaman's 7th Straight Budget

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will on Tuesday present her 7th straight Budget that would lay a roadmap for Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047 while giving a glimpse of 10 years' performance. All eyes will be on whether Sitharaman provides the much-expected tax relief for the middle class, leaving more money in their hands, as there is tax buoyancy. Besides, the market also expects staying on the fiscal glide path to lower the fiscal deficit to 4.5 per cent of GDP by 2025-26. Ms Sitharaman, who would be presenting her seventh straight budget, had in her first Budget in 2019 replaced the leather briefcase -- which had been in use for decades for carrying Budget documents -- with a traditional 'bahi-khata' wrapped in red cloth. This year's Budget would be in paperless form, as done in the last three years. Here are the key numbers to watch out for the first full Budget of Modi 3.0: * Fiscal Deficit: The budgeted fiscal deficit, which is the difference betwee...

Explained: EPFO's Round-The-Clock 'Contact Centre' And What It Will Do

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is working on a round-the-clock multilingual "contact centre" for its nearly seven crore active subscribers. The planned centre will remain functional 24×7 across 365 days. The move is aimed at offering a single-window interface to those wanting to register complaints or requiring recourse to a redressal mechanism. This comes after EPFO faced backlash on social media recently over delays in complaint resolution and an increase in the rates of rejection of settlement claims, The Indian Express reported. A tender has been floated by the government body to set up this contact centre for "a robust system which can replace EPFO's grievance registration portal (EPFiGMS) with a more advanced and sophisticated grievance system". The selection meeting that went on for several ...

No President Nod To Replacing Governor As Punjab Universities' Chancellor

A Punjab bill that seeks to replace the state Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of state-run universities has been returned by the President without assent, official sources said. Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and three other bills were passed by the Punjab Assembly in the two-day session in June last year but the governor had called the session "patently illegal." Later in November last year, the Supreme Court held that the June 19-20 session was constitutionally valid and directed the Punjab governor to decide on the Bills passed by the legislative assembly session. The Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was for replacing the Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of state-run universities. However, Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit reserved this bill along with two others -- the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023 -- for the consideration of the President in acco...

Trump Selects Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance As Vice President Candidate

Donald Trump selected J.D. Vance, a Republican U.S. senator from Ohio, as his running mate on Monday, elevating a politician who once criticized the former president in acid terms but has since become one of his most stalwart defenders. The news, carried on Trump's Truth Social media website, emerged at the start of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to nominate the party's presidential ticket. The selection of James David Vance, author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," could increase the odds of Trump supporters turning out for the Nov. 5 election as the Ohio native is deeply popular with the Republican candidate's base. A staunch conservative from a Republican state, Vance is unlikely to bring many new voters into Trump's corner, however, and may even alienate some moderates. Some Trump supporters had pushed him to select a woman or person of color as his No. 2 to expand a coalition that skews toward white men. The former...

The AR-15: One Of US's Deadliest, Most Popular Guns Used In Trump Attack

The attempted assassination of former US president Donald Trump with a semi-automatic rifle illustrates once again how easy it is for shooters in the US to get their hands on inexpensive, easy-to-use, military-style weapons. The AR-15-style rifle is one of the most popular guns in the US. It has also been a common denominator in some of the country's worst mass shootings. Here are some key facts about the weapon: Why Are AR-15s So Lethal? The AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon, meaning a user can fire multiple shots in quick succession. Its cousin, the M-16, has been used by the US military since Vietnam. While some military assault rifles are fully automatic, civilians are prohibited from owning such weapons in most circumstances. AR-15s fire high-velocity bullets that travel at triple the speed of a handgun round, are accurate over long distances, and cause expansive, devastating wounds to soft tissue and internal organs. While handguns account for more deaths per year in th...

Novak Djokovic Sets Up Wimbledon 2024 Final Against Carlos Alcaraz

The most successful men's tennis player in the modern era, Novak Djokovic secured a straightforward 3-setter victory against Lorenzo Musetti in the men's singles semifinal of Wimbledon 2023 on Friday. Djokovic had an awkward start to the first set that saw him being broken early but the Serbian ace produced his best show, beating the Italian in the first three sets to secure a convincing victory. Djokovic would now face Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday. Alcaraz had beaten Russia's Daniil Medvedev in a 4-set clash.  Just five weeks after undergoing knee surgery, seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic reached his 10th final at the All England Club with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 win over the Italian 25th seed. Djokovic, 37, can equal Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles and become the tournament's oldest champion of the modern era if he avenges last year's dramatic five-set final loss to Alcaraz. The last time Djokovic and Musetti met was at the Fre...

Dancer Bites Off Hen's Head During Performance In Andhra Pradesh, FIR Filed

The Andhra Pradesh Police have filed a case against a dancer for killing a hen by biting off its head during a performance. The police in the state's Anakapalli district registered the case on a complaint by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. After learning about a video of a man deliberately killing a hen by biting off its head with his teeth during a dance performance in full public view, PETA India worked with senior cops to get an FIR registered. The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, against the performer and the organisers. The disturbing incident, witnessed by children in the audience, was filmed and posted on social media under the guise of entertainment, the organisation said. "Those who abuse animals are often shown to have no regard for human life, either. For the sake of everyone's safety, it is imperative that members of the pub...

Watch: Biden Introduces Zelensky As "President Putin" In Another Gaffe

US President Joe Biden mistakenly introduced Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky as his Russian foe Vladimir Putin at a NATO summit Thursday in a blunder just hours before a press conference that could decide the fate of his reelection bid. The 81-year-old quickly corrected himself, and Zelensky quipped that he was "better" than Putin, but the gaffe intensified concerns about Biden's mental acuity after a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump two weeks ago. "And now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin," Biden said as he announced a NATO-Ukraine compact at the summit in Washington.
