Israel Killed Over 25,000 Palestinians Since Hamas Attack: US Defence Chief

Israel has killed more than 25,000 Palestinian women and children since the October 7 attack by militant group Hamas, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday. "It's over 25,000," Austin told lawmakers when asked during a House Armed Services Committee hearing for the figure on women and children killed. The United States has backed Israel since the unprecedented Hamas attack in October that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people. Israel responded to the attack with a relentless assault on Gaza that the coastal territory's health ministry said has left more than 30,000 people dead. The number provided by Austin is within the same range, and come as Washington pushes for a ceasefire and a reduction in civilian casualties in Gaza. Karnataka Caste Census Submitted Before Polls, Irks Lingayats, Vokkaligas

A socio-economic survey report, submitted today, has set off a political row in Karnataka, even though its contents are yet to be made public. The survey, ordered by the previous Siddaramaiah government in 2017, has upset the politically dominant Lingayat and Vokkaliga castes, who now want it to be shredded. The 2017 socio economic survey report was submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today by Jaiprakash Hegde. The Chairman of the OBC Commission walked into Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru at 2.45 pm today -- the last day of his tenure -- and met Mr Siddaramaiah briefly, before addressing the media. "We have submitted the report. The CM said he will table it in the next Cabinet and decide," he said. The Chief Minister concurred, refusing to comment any further. Sources said the findings could challenge the dominance of the Lingayat sect and the Other Backward Caste Vokkaliga community as the largest voting blocks in the state. According to sources and reports published ov...

As the Israel-Hamas war intensifies, a new video of Israel's elite Egoz commando unit killing a group of Hamas operatives using drones and grenades in southern Gaza has surfaced online, as per a report in the New York Post . The 28-second short clip shows the aftermath of a shootout between Israeli Defence Forces soldiers and two Hamas operatives, who were sheltering inside a structure in Khan Younis. Trump Wins South Carolina Republican Primary, Defeats Nikki Haley

Donald Trump cruised to a decisive victory Saturday in the South Carolina Republican primary, blitzing rival Nikki Haley in her home state and continuing his march to the nomination and a White House rematch with Joe Biden. Trump completed a sweep of the first four major nominating contests, converting a year of blockbuster polls into a likely insurmountable lead going into the "Super Tuesday" 15-state voting bonanza in 10 days. While Haley repeatedly questioned the 77-year-old former president's mental fitness and warned another Trump presidency would bring "chaos," her efforts appeared to do little to damage his standing among Republicans. The margin of victory was not immediately clear but it was expected to be significant, with major US networks calling the race within seconds of the polls closing.  Haley, a popular governor of South Carolina in the 2010s and the only woman to have entered the Republican contest, was looking to outperform expectations in...

Manipur Group Calls To End Suspension Of Ops Agreement, Days Before Review

Image
A global alliance of Manipur's Meitei community has called for scrapping a controversial ceasefire with over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups amid the ethnic conflict between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis. The Kuki-Zo insurgent groups that signed the tripartite suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government in 2008 have been hiding under the SoO safety net "to covertly act against India's peace and security," the Meitei Alliance, a group whose members are Meitei civil society organisations around the world including in the UK, the US, and Europe said in a statement on Saturday. Every year, a joint monitoring group (JMG) reviews the SoO agreement and decides whether to end or renew it. The next review is on February 29. Broadly, the SoO agreement says the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly. The Manipur government in Ma...

The Allahabad High Court has held that a property purchased by a husband in the name of a wife, who is a homemaker and has no independent source of income, is a family property. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal said that it is common and natural for Hindu husbands to purchase properties in the name of their wives. The Judge was hearing a case involving a son's claim for declaration of co-ownership of his dead father's property. "This court under Section 114 of the Indian Evidence Act may presume the existence of fact that the property purchased by a Hindu husband in the name of his spouse, who is a homemaker and does not have an independent source of income, will be the property of family, because in common course of natural event Hindu husband purchases a property in the name of his wife, who is homemaker and does not have any source of income for the benefit of family," the court observed. A moon lander built by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines reached lunar orbit on Wednesday, headed for an attempt at the first US touchdown on Earth's nearest celestial neighbour in more than 50 years, and the first ever by a private spacecraft. The six-legged Nova-C lander, dubbed Odysseus, entered a circular orbit 57 miles (92 km) above the lunar surface after firing its main rocket thruster for nearly seven minutes in an orbital insertion manoeuvre, the company said in an online statement. Assuming all goes according to plan, the robot spacecraft is expected to gradually lower its orbit over the next 24 hours and land at crater Malapert A near the moon's south pole at 5:49 p.m. EST (2249 GMT) on Thursday, carrying a suite of NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations. A day after his retirement from cricket, Bengal star Manoj Tiwary raised concerns over the IPL-centric approach of young cricketers and strongly advocated for greater emphasis on Ranji Trophy. The 38-year-old Tiwary, who served Bengal for about two decades and represented India in 12 ODIs and three T20Is, had recently posted on X that Ranji Trophy should be "scrapped" but did not elaborate on the subject as he was an active BCCI cricketer. He was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for that remark. He also had a Facebook live in the midst of the match where he said he would come out in the open after taking retirement. "I can observe that young players have adopted an IPL-centric mindset," Tiwary said, referring to central contracted players opting out of playing domestic cricket. "Those who don't play IPL often go to Dubai or other places whenever they find some free time. However, this trend is diminishing the significance of the prestigious Ranji Trop...
